It’s a tale of passion, discipline, dedication and serious business. And to talk about this dubbawala business model, Dr. Pawan Agarwal, CEO of Mumbai Dabbawalla Association, visited Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM), IIT Kharagpur recently and captivate the students and teachers alike for an hour. The lecture by Dr. Agarwal was one of the main attractions of 'Purvodaya', the flagship Business fest of VGSoM. The theme of 'Purvodaya' 2017 was 'Simple, Smart and Sustainable' and who could have enlightened the students more on this than the Mumbai Dabbawalla's! "We have special focus on operations and supply chain management and the Dabbawalla's have exploded the students to the implementation of the same at the grassroots," said Prof. Tuheena Mukherjee of VGSoM.
Speaking at length to the students Dr. Agarwal explained how 5000 dabbawalla's transporting over 5 lakh lunch boxes from homes to offices and back have never committed any mistake. “We give importance to human values and believe there is no alternative to hard work. For us customer is God and work is worship. With this mantra we have survived for more than a century. It is for this we have never called strike or had a police case We are not afraid of mistakes but we are afraid of its consequences. We know if we make mistake the customer may remain hungry or eat outside food, which we would not allow to happen. If you all do the same thing in life and work, you too would never commit mistakes,” Dr. Agarwal told a captivated audience at VGSoM. For their logistical competency the Mumbai Dabbawalla Association has received the most sought after six sigma and ISO certification, without even applying for any of them! "Learn to shoulder responsibilities and don't fret about pay packet. If you work hard and if you deserve you will get it, just like the way we got ISO and Six Sigma certification without even knowing what they were all about," exclaimed Dr. Agarwal.
