IIT Kharagpur is starting the Subir Chowdhury School of Quality and Reliability (Q&R), a first of its kind in India. The Institute which set the trend for engineering, management, medical technology and IPR law education in the IITs in India, has now ventured in the domain of Quality with the aim to improve the trinity of Process, Planet and People (3P’s) targeting Engineering systems, Human systems and natural systems. The School will be truly interdisciplinary in which faculty members as well as students will be from various disciplines. Apart from traditional Q&R areas, the school will have a holistic view on QR by including various application domains of the 3P’s. The school is being named after alumnus and globally renowned Quality Expert Subir Chowdhury, the founding donor of the School.
“Quality is the first class criteria today. This affects not only products and services but our way of life and life itself. Quality hazards have led many a times to life risks. It is crucial for us to adopt formal education in the domain of Quality and apply it in the end products. The aim for establishing the School is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of India as well as develop quality conscious global citizens. The School in collaboration with other academic units in the Institute will offer academic courses, research and mission-mode programmes in the area of Quality and Reliability which would bring about social transformations. It shall also serve as a hub of Intellectual Property in Quality. The School is will be a trend-setter, as has been many of IIT Kharagpur’s initiatives, particularly those supported by the alumni. IIT Kharagpur is grateful to its distinguished alumnus Dr. Subir Chowdhury, a quality Guru, for passionately driving and supporting this initiative. The School will receive funding and expertise from the same source which is an added advantage.” said Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur.
Renowned Quality Expert and distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur (B.Tech./AE/89/RK), Dr. Subir Chowdhury, is the patron of the School. He is a committed philanthropist who through the Subir and Malini Chowdhury Foundation has contributed significantly in academics at top global institutions. The Foundation has offered a funding of USD 1 million as endowment funding for this purpose which will be equally matched by IIT Kharagpur. “Most common citizens feel that 'quality' is not their personal responsibility. If all of us feel that practicing quality in everything we do is my personal responsibility, the society at large will improve. That's why quality awareness for the mass is critical. Poor quality is a great loss to society. The economic impact of poor quality on a nation is huge. It affects the quality of life for its citizens. The quality processes taught and practiced in India need to be upgraded to a much higher level. Without holistic approach to quality, quality of life will not improve. I am deeply honoured that my alma mater IIT Kharagpur established the 'first' school of quality and reliability in the globe. It is a dream come true for me personally, as IIT Kharagpur campus life contributed to reshape my thinking during my critical years of youth. I hope that the school will lead India and rest of the world on 'global quality awareness' and excel on academic research as well as corporate education and consulting of quality and reliability” said Subir Chowdhury.
Dr. Chowdhury's 15th book THE DIFFERENCE: When Good Enough Isn't Enough will be released in India and US on 21st February and the book's purpose is to educate common people on developing caring mindset that is foundation of practicing quality in daily life.
