It seeks to raise a minimum of Rs. 50 Lakhs per batch to make the batch a “Founding Endowment Batch” and Rs.1 Crore to make the batch "Super Founding Endowment Batch".
IIT-KGP has always been the source of enlightenment and inspiration to thousands of youth for more than six decades. It was the dream of independent India to take the quality of its higher education to world class standard and IIT-KGP has successfully achieved it. However, in this new era, the challenge is bigger. With more institutions including IITs coming up, need for greater professionalism at every stage of management and innovations driven research has become very important in educational institutions.
The utilisation of the endowment fund will be controlled by the members of IIT KGP Endowment Committee consisting of Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti (Director KGP, Chairman), Prof. Sriman Bhattacharya (Deputy Director KGP, Member), Prof. Siddhartha Mukhopadhyay (Dean AA&IR KGP, Convener) , Mr. Pradip Payne (Registrar KGP, Member), Prof. N L Mitra (External Member), Prof. T K Ghoshal (External Member), Mr. Mayank Jalan (External Member), Mr. Sandipan Chakravortty (Alumnus, Member), Mr. Arjun Malhotra (Alumnus, Member), Mr. Vinod Gupta (Alumnus, Member), Mr. Shovan Panigrahi (VP-Technology Student Gymkhana KGP, Student Member) and will be presented to the donors through our annual report. The Founding Endowment Batches would be given the privilege to name a classroom with names of all the generous contributors firmly engraved. It is our way to help our donors leave their legacy behind. The batches and the contributors would be remembered by all the batches of technocrats passing out from IIT KGP

Founding Endowment Batches are 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1975, 1984 and 1991 who have raised Rs.50 lakhs plus. Batches from different genres like 62, 63, 65, 67, 69, 74, 79, 87, 88, 89, and 90 to name a few are very actively contributing.
Endowment Fund (Interest Earned) availability and schemes for utilisation in FY 2016-17
1. INR 20 Lakh to be made available for international competitions. Committee recommends and requests that this is considered to be matched equally by the Institute.
2. The remaining fund to be utilized for promoting research talent at the undergraduate level. The Committee recommends and requests that the Institute may earmark INR 50 Lakh as research challenge grant to be awarded at the beginning of each academic year to UG students either of first year who have qualified among the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers in the given year or to UG students of second and third years who have been among top 25 students among their batchmates, as per their CGPA at the end of the last academic year. The best researchers to be awarded variously to the tune of INR 16 Lakh from the earning of the endowment income.
Normally we see alums from various grad batches contribute in range from Rs.25,000/- to Rs.5 lakhs for their respective batches.
