With the placement season at IITs to commence from Thursday, December 1, preparations for India’s most coveted recruitment process are in full swing. Thousands of students are currently undergoing various placement processes being conducted by the recruiters at the respective IITs. At IIT Kharagpur the scene is no different, students are enthusiastic, cautious and optimistic about their career and the Institute’s Career Development Centre (CDC) is gearing up for the finale. Semester examination was over on November 29th. With the determined attitude, the students are ready to appear for the juncture which will ingress them to their professional lives.
In 2016-17, a total of 2100 students have registered for placement at the Institute with a final student population of more than 2600. IIT Kharagpur which has been consistently ranked as India’s top institution in QS Graduate Employability Ranking maintains a track record of close to 80% success rate of students registered for placement. The road to this success though focused on academics includes other elements as well. “Recruiters typically favour students with moderate to high CGPA having good communication and problem solving skills”, said Prof. Debasis Deb, Chairman, CDC. The overall talent acquired by the KGPians, the name lovingly used by students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur, through their dynamic student life at IIT KGP is also attractive to the recruiters. Being a campus afar from city, the students have evolved an exciting student life with general competitions in socio-cultural activities, sports and of course techno-management. Additionally, students also take part in career development skills such as alumni affairs, placement coordination, branding, international relations management etc. These activities not only add value to their CVs but also upgrade their management skills and professional attitude. IIT Kharagpur acknowledges this need and has even institutionalized many of the aforementioned activities.
Going a step ahead, the Institute has also set up a training process for interested students, 2 months ahead of placement season. The training session which lasted from October 1 to November 12 comprised of grooming of students for mock GD and interview and soft skill development. About 100 students appeared for this training. The sessions were conducted by professionals from industry such as IBM, thus enabling the students to experience real-life industry situations. Additionally, two pre-assessment tests comprising aptitude, English language, numerical problem solving and computer knowledge were also conducted by the CDC as practice tests. Students appearing for this test may be exempted from similar test to be conducted by some of the recruiters.
Students’ right are also being guided in making a conscious career choice. The Career Development Centre (CDC) is providing 360 degree career solutions to the students with Career Development Programme, Corporate Relations, Internships and Placements. As it is evident, that making a wrong choice early may limit making the right choice later. Till now a major number of students go for IT, Financial, Banking and Consulting jobs etc. However there are many opportunities available in the core sectors and other sectors. “This year IIT Kharagpur has made a consorted effort to invite PSUs to the campus during December placement season and 13 of them have already confirmed their willingness”, says Prof. Deb. Further, studies have also proven that students with a clear focus for the future are more intrinsically motivated to succeed. CDC at IIT Kharagpur’s novel initiative has been working towards making every student to have a focused, conscious and own strength based career selection.
