IIT KGP joins hand with ICMR for integrated research & students exchange

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) and Indian Council of Medical Research  (ICMR) have come together to promote interaction and collaboration between faculty, staff and students. This collaboration will be facilitating student exchange programmes for a short duration, such as summer/winter terms or short courses, or for a longer duration not exceeding two semesters. Also joint tapping of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally under the ‘Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN). The two parties will explore opportunities of undertaking joint research projects under IIT KGP mega initiative in healthcare ‘Signals and Systems for Life Science’, IMPRINT (IMPacting Research, Innovation and Technology) – India that may be funded by ICMR, MHRD, other Indian funding agencies and external funding agencies. Under the IMPRINT program, IIT KGP (as nodal centre for Healthcare for all IITs, NIITs and IISc) and ICMR will work together for the purpose of identifying the needs of the country in terms of research and technology requirements and partner to address major technological challenges in identified areas relevant to our country’s needs.
 
IIT KGP and ICMR will explore opportunities for interaction among members of faculty between the two institutions as well as creating Visiting/Adjunct Faculty positions, Joint PhD/Masters programmes, setting up of a joint research centre at IIT KGP for long term collaboration between two institutions. IIT KGP and ICMR institutions and medical institutions identified by ICMR may formulate joint academic activities such as short course, seminars, workshops or conferences based on mutual interests and available expertise in both the institutions. They may also share and carry out joint research in technology for distance and computer-based learning. ICMR institutions and medical institutions identified by ICMR will explore participation in National Digital Library project coordinated by IIT KGP. Both institutes will explore the possibility of joint collaborations with other Science and Technology Departments/ Medical Institutes/IITs/Universities in all the areas mentioned before.
 
ICMR and IIT KGP will approach government, other funding agencies and industries for funding the aforesaid initiatives. The two institutions may also consider providing initiation grant or other kind of support from their own resources. Both institutes will provide tuition fee waivers to the exchange students. “This collaboration will facilitate doctors to study in an institution known for its excellence in engineering and technology and engineers to study at ICMR thus providing a platform for interdisciplinary academics and leading further to integrated research aimed towards promoting meeting the healthcare needs of the country”, said Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director of IIT KGP.
