From Mumbai Dabbawalas to India’s Top Corporate Leaders – Business Fest at IITKGP VGSOM showcases A-

It’s a tale of passion, discipline, dedication and serious business. And to talk about this dubbawala business model, Dr. Pawan Agarwal, CEO of Mumbai Dabbawalla Association, visited Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM), IIT Kharagpur recently and captivate the students and teachers alike for an hour. The lecture by Dr. Agarwal was one of the main attractions of 'Purvodaya', the flagship Business fest of VGSoM. The theme of 'Purvodaya' 2017 was 'Simple, Smart and Sustainable' and who could have enlightened the students more on this than the Mumbai Dabbawalla's! "We have special focus on operations and supply chain management and the Dabbawalla's have exploded the students to the implementation of the same at the grassroots," said Prof. Tuheena Mukherjee of VGSoM.
Speaking at length to the students Dr. Agarwal explained how 5000 dabbawalla's transporting over 5 lakh lunch boxes from homes to offices and back have never committed any mistake. “We give importance to human values and believe there is no alternative to hard work. For us customer is God and work is worship. With this mantra we have survived for more than a century. It is for this we have never called strike or had a police case We are not afraid of mistakes but we are afraid of its consequences. We know if we make mistake the customer may remain hungry or eat outside food, which we would not allow to happen. If you all do the same thing in life and work, you too would never commit mistakes,” Dr. Agarwal told a captivated audience at VGSoM. For their logistical competency the Mumbai Dabbawalla Association has received the most sought after six sigma and ISO certification, without even applying for any of them! "Learn to shoulder responsibilities and don't fret about pay packet. If you work hard and if you deserve you will get it, just like the way we got ISO and Six Sigma certification without even knowing what they were all about," exclaimed Dr. Agarwal.
The Leadership Summit focused on the theme of ‘Rethinking leadership’ witnessed the views of various business leaders like Mr. Tarun Katial, CEO, Reliance  Broadcast Network, Mr Lalit Malik, CFO, Dabur India Limited, Mr Aashish P Sommaiyaa, MD &  CEO, Motilal Oswal, Mr Sumit Sharma, Chief Operating  Officer, Lacoste India, Mr. Sheshadri PV, CEO, Future  Supply Chain Solutions Limited , Mr. Sandip Lakhina, Former CEO,  Mint HT Media & EVP, Dentsu Aegis  Network. The event was moderated by Ms. Mitali Mukherjee, former Markets Editor & Senior Anchor, CNBC-TV18. The business leaders emphasized the need to change the leadership skills alluding to a variety of leadership styles from Ramayan to the new era. The summit was very interactive with the students posing questions on various leadership styles to the elite panellists. Students reported cherishing the experiences shared by the panellists in the summit.

The flagship competition of 'Purvodaya' 2017 was Jack of All Trades “JOAT” containing 21 rounds focusing on best business manager carried whooping prize money of 1 lakh was won by Symbiosis Pune. Over 250 students participated in 3 day in over 15 different events. “Run for the cause – Cancer” was Purvodaya 2017’s initiative. It attracted around 300 participants and the presence of Mr. Lalit Malik, CFO Dabur Ltd., justified the responsible role of corporates for social causes. The Alumni meet known as ‘Reminiscence’ had the first two batches of VGSOM, with great excitement ahead of its silver jubilee in 2018.
Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur is the first B-School in the IIT system.
