IIT Kharagpur will be recognizing faculty excellence at all levels of the career path of a teacher and staff in the Institute by endowing regular faculty members through Chair Professorship Awards and Faculty Excellence Awards and regular non-faculty staff members with Staff Excellence Awards.
The Institute will shortly be announcing 6 Chair Professor Awards for full Professors for a 3 year term which may be renewed once. The award amount will be Rs 25,000/- per month over and above the salary. Also 18 Faculty Excellence Awards are being instituted for the amount of Rs 15,000/- per month. The awards will be given to 6 faculty members at Associate Professor level, 6 at Assistant Professor (who have completed 3 years) and 6 at Assistant Professor (who have not completed 3 years) for a 2 / 3 year term depending upon cases. Such awards are a good way to recognize contributions of young and mid-level faculty in academics and research. The award amount will be in addition to salary. Detailed qualifying criterion is based on (a) Peer Recognition / National or International Awards (b) Research Output (c) Teaching Feedback (d) Sponsored Projects. Institute Standing Committee will make initial shortlist. Committee Chaired by Director with external experts will make final recommendation for the Board to decide.
Very recently, the Institute has set up an alumni funded Avinash Gupta Chair Professorship Award at the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning funded by the friends and family member of Late Shri Avinash Gupta. The IIT Kharagpur Alumni Foundation India has also set up a Faculty Award. The Institute also encourages its alumni to contribute towards such awards singly or collectively. The award amount to Rs.20000/- per month will be in addition to his/ her usual institute salary of permanent Professor, preferably in Architecture & Regional Planning with interest in Health Care facilities. A donation of at least Rs. 2,40,000/- per year shall be made to IIT Kharagpur by Shri Ron Gupta on behalf of the friends and family members of Late Mr. Avinash Gupta by 31st July each year for five years to cover the Chair Award expenses for the Chair Position for the 12 months. It is expected that the Chair position shall be established and a selection made in the beginning of the Academic Year 2016 – 17. The award will initially be for three years, which may be extended by up to two more years. Shri Avinash Gupta, a B.Arch. graduate of the 1968 batch of students from the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning of IIT Kharagpur, passed away in June 2015. Shri Avinash Gupta was a respected architect with interest in healthcare facilities. His last position was that of an Executive Vice President at Post Buckley Schuh and Jernigan, a large Architectural / Engineering company in Miami, Florida USA.
Such recognition of faculty excellence not only leads to higher motivational factor among the academic community but also helps students’ excellence and promotes the Institute’s brand thus attracting brighter students. These positions are primarily endowed which are funded through alumni, corporate or government grant.
The Institute has also recently invited nominations for Staff Excellence Awards which will be given annually to one member of each Category A, B and C. The award amount is Rs 50,000/-. Staff members both permanent or under Institute contract who have worked continuously for a minimum of 5 years and made significant impact on the Institute’s functioning through outstanding dedication, competence and exceptional performance, excellent service to academic community and staff and ingenuity, are eligible for this award.
