63rd Convocation at IIT Kharagpur

Kharagpur, August 5 & 6, 2017: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur organized its 63rd Convocation on August 5th and 6th, 2017. The Chief Guests of the event are Shri Dinesh K Sarraf, Chairman & Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., Chairman, ONGC Videsh Ltd. and other ONGC Group companies and Chairman, Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd. and Padma Vibhushan Professor Man Mohan Sharma, Fellow of the Royal Society, an eminent and highly regarded Scientist and academician, for August 5th and 6th respectively. The programme is presided over by Dr. Sudha N Murthy, Member of the Board of Governors, IIT Kharagpur and Chairperson, Infosys Foundation.
The Institute saw a significant transition in transdisciplinary education with the Subir Chowdhury School of Quality and Reliability, the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences and the Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness. Further multi-institutional programmes have been launched such as a two-year full-time joint Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics with Indian Statistical Institute and IIM Calcutta and a unique Integrated M.Sc.-Ph. D. programme in Chemical and Molecular Biology with IACS Kolkata. IIT Kharagpur and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have come together to promote interaction and collaboration between faculty, staff and students.
The year 2016-17 witnessed the implementation of two landmark R&D schemes led by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, namely the Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY) and IMPRINT which aim to streamline the partnership of various ministries and industry in areas of advanced high-end research at the academic institutions. Under UAY, the Institute has received funding to the tune of INR 66.10 Crore including the largest UAY project for developing an intelligent hybrid electric vehicle in partnership with Tata Motors. Under IMPRINT, the Institute has received a fund-commitment of INR 65.49 Crore.
The Institute is leading several national mission projects such as GIAN, NDL, presence besides being a key contributor to NPTEL, T10KT. In addition, the Institute is leading new R&D initiatives viz. UK India Clean Energy Research Institute, Center of Excellence in Climate Change Studies, FMSAFE - a Center of Excellence on formal methods for safety critical systems in partnership with Indian Railways. The Institute is playing lead role in the PAN-IIT collaborations with ONGC. The Institute has entered into a partnership with State Bank of India for advanced R&D in Financial Data Analytics; with Tata Consultancy Services for collaborative research in a wide spectrum of areas.
The Institute has licensed more than 530 patents; both national and international, have been filed and a total of 139 patents have been granted. The Institute has also started various Challenge Grants program for Student Innovation, Industry Collaboration and International Collaboration.
The Institute has embarked on a proactive recruitment process. Special efforts are being made to identify and induct brilliant faculty from industry and academia within the country and from abroad. Competitive and collaborative excellence is being installed through promotion of Research Challenge Grants, Institute Chair Professorship, Chair Professorship through Endowments and Teaching Excellence Awards for all faculty members.
Development of quality and competent human resource for the country has always been in the focus of the Institute’s activities. The graduates from IIT Kharagpur are well sought of by corporate houses, companies and institutes within and abroad. The success of its graduate output is evident with the Institute being India’s highest-ranked institution for nurturing graduate employability, features in the Top 100 QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2016-17 and the brilliant alumni who make important decisions that are pivotal to the world outside and within the Nation.
In these two days, IIT Kharagpur offered the country more than 2500 young talents brimming with the possibility to lead the nation further into 21st century and etch the prominence of India in the world map like their predecessors. On August 5th, 2017 degrees were conferred to 453 Dual Degree, 471 B.Tech. (Hons), 47 B.Arch. (Hons.), 200 five-year integrated M.Sc. and 144 two-year M.Sc. degrees. On August 6th, 2016 degrees were awarded to 268 Ph.D. (i.e. 249 Ph.D. + 6 Joint M.Tech./MCP-Ph.D. + 13 Joint M.Sc-Ph.D.), 37 MS, 750 M.Tech., 39 MCP, 81 MBA, 39 EMBA, 8 MMST, 16 MHRM, 13 LLM, 37 LLB.
Mr. Saurav Maji of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering is the recipient of the President of India Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best academic performance among the outgoing B.Tech. (Hons) and B.Arch. (Hons) students.
Ms. Darshita Chaturvedi of the Department of Civil Engineering has won the Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy Memorial Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best all-round performance among the B.Tech (Hons) and B.Arch (Hons) outgoing students.
The Prime Minister of India Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best academic performance among the Dual Degree and Integrated M.Sc. outgoing students goes to Mr. Biswajit Paria of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Dr. Jnan Chandra Ghosh Memorial Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best all-round performance among the outgoing Dual Degree and Integrated M.Sc. students is awarded to Mr. Kumar Abhishek of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering.
Ms. Shreya Roy of the Department of Chemistry has won the Professor Jagadish Chandra Bose Memorial Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best academic performance among the outgoing students of all 2-year M.Sc. courses in the Science Disciplines.
Ms. Pavani R.V. of the Department of Mathematics is the recipient of The Director’s Gold Medal 2016-2017 for the best academic performance among the students completing M.Tech. and MCP courses.
